Our Vision đź‘€
To build a nationwide platform that centralises advice for every Australian healthcare career hurdle. For high-school students right through to Professors
Our Mission 🎯
To level the playing field and equip all aspiring Muslim healthcare professionals with Nasihah (sincere counsel) to accelerate their career progression
Project Summary
Introducing the AIMA Careers Corner: a new nationwide platform designed to assist Australian Healthcare professionals with career progression. Our goal is to create a centralised hub of advice for all career stages, from high school students right through to consultants, catering to specific training level needs. We believe we have a unique opportunity to build an excellent resource that will elevate our community’s professional potential and serve generations for years to come. Specifically we believe in the success of this project for the following reasons:
Linear Nature of Healthcare
The unique “linear” nature of healthcare training in Australia, hence advice is often repeated due to the same hurdles everyone must face. We want to centralise advice for all career hurdles such as: GAMSAT, UCAT, interviews, internship applications, getting onto speciality training programs, BPT/GSSE Exams, Fellowship applications/exams, starting as a junior consultant etc.
The “student” will benefit as they no longer need to personally know someone in the field to gain access to such insider knowledge.
The “mentor” will benefit from having their generalisable advice preserved on a platform that can be propagated to hundreds of prospective students, thus impacting larger audiences and acting as a Sadaqah Jariyah.
Additionally, we also intend to connect our community with people who have recently passed such career hurdles for ongoing mentorship, particularly in the same state.
Collegiality
Collegiality in the medical world is very common. This is heightened within the Muslim Medical community and the desire to mentor your fellow brothers and sisters in their medical careers. Hence we know if we build the platform, community members will rush to provide their experiences and career advice.
Our initial build will focus on medical career stages, with the view to expand to allied health professions (Nursing, Physio, Dentistry, Optometry etc). The platform is currently in the development phase with the team focusing on creating a website and drafting content.
Position Summary and Key Responsibilities:
Given we are trying to build content for high school students to Professors, we require “Career Stage Leads” to own each specific Career Stage. You will first map out all core content for the Career Stage (Eg: GAMSAT/GPA /Interviews for Postgrad Med Entry) then coordinate the creation of such content. Vitally, the Lead is not the sole content creator. They can contribute if they wish but they should also delegate content creation to other contacts. These contacts can be personal or utilising the database of over 100 responses from the 2023 AIMA National Conference when the AIMA Careers Corner (then named AIMA Mentoring Hub) was first pitched.
Ideally a Lead will have recently completed the previous career hurdle, hence can easily relate and curate all necessary content. Eg: The “Undergrad Med Entry” Lead would ideally be a first year undergrad Med student.
Career Stage Lead Vacancies:
Key Skills:
Time Commitment: 2-3 hrs/week
Support and Supervision:
Career Stage Leads will be supported by either Yusuf or Farhan based on the career stage.
All Career Stages until Internship Applications (inclusive) will report to Farhan aka “Student Stage Lead”
All Career Stages beyond Intership Applications will report to Yusuf aka “Doctor Stage Lead”
